I love talking about meditation, learning about meditation, practicing meditation, creating meditation!

All and all, I am a big meditation guy 🙂

However, oddly when I tell people who are not familiar with meditation about the practice, they seem to have a weird misunderstanding about what meditation is all about.

Below you’ll learn about not one but 7 most common myths about meditation.

 

– Myth # 1: Meditation is Concentration

This is so untrue, it not even funny! When you meditate, your mind becomes more relaxed. The basis of a good meditation session is to let go of all daily concerns & worries and cultivate a state a state of deep rest.

– Myth # 2: Meditation Is For Old People

OMG, when one of my friends told me that, I about fell off my chair! Meditation is practiced universally by both young and old people alike. Meditation is beneficial for people of all age groups.

– Myth # 3: Meditation Is Like Hypnotizing Yourself

For God Sake, seriously! If there’s anything meditation can be is the total opposite of hypnosis. Under hypnosis, the participants have no clue what they are going through. On the other hand, when meditating, the participants have heightened levels of self and surrounding awareness.

– Myth # 4: Sit In The Lotus Posture To Meditate

I don’t even know who made this one up? You can sit in any position that feels comfortable to you when meditation. While sitting crossed-legged is the most famous position amongst meditators, the golden rule is to be comfortable while practicing. I have been meditating for two years now and I have done it while cross-legged, sitting in a chair, or even resting in my recliner chair.

– Myth # 5 Meditation Is A Way Of Running Away From Problems

SO NOT TRUE! When you meditate, your mind relaxes which gives you the ability to gain clarity and focus. That state can be exactly what you need in order to look at your problems with a different perspective and then find the best available option to solve them.

– Myth # 6. Meditation, A Religious Practice

HA!? Meditation was around way before any known religion. If anything, Meditation brings harmony amongst the different known religions, nations and faiths altogether.

– Myth # 7: Meditation Is Thought Control

WHAT? If there one thing you cannot do, it has to be thought control. Simply put, thoughts cannot be controlled. Thoughts are very fluid; they come and go as they please. During meditation, you do not long for good thoughts and try to avoid bad ones. You simply witness each thought as it floats in and out of your mind. Eventually, you learn to transcend thoughts and move into a deep inner space of silence.
