How to stop feeling overwhelmed?

We live in a very high demand culture!

Everybody is expecting us to perform.

Doctors are working over 60 hours shifts each week; entrepreneurs are working around the clock and burning the midnight oil.

employees, around the globe, are working their butt off trying to please their bosses, clients, and co-workers.

Sadly this causes a lot of stress!

Stress is the number one cause of the feeling overwhelmed for majority of people.

That’s why I want you to become proactive at stopping stress in its track before it causes you the feeling of being overwhelmed.

But first let me cover this concept with you!

Being recharged vs being drained.

As humans, we are made of energy.

And energy can be recharged or drained, and if you think of yourself as a bank account where you are either depositing energy into you or using energy, then this will help you understand the charged vs. drained concept.

Every activity we do while awake or asleep will lead you to feel either recharged or drained.

Energy recharging activities will result in positive energy levels in your energy bank account.

For instance, having a bedtime schedule, and getting a good night’s sleep every day of the week will ensure that you have enough energy to use throughout the day/week.

On the other hand, energy draining activities will result in insufficient energy levels in your energy bank account.

Working long hours every week can drain your energy and will affect your overall health. I don’t need to mention examples as you know how the story ends.

Besides, a study published last year by John Pencavel of Stanford University found that employee productivity falls sharply after a 50-hour work-week, and it falls off a cliff after 55 hours.

Matter of fact, productivity falls so much so that someone who puts in 70 hours produces nothing more with those extra 15 hours.

Now, either activity isn’t bad in itself.

Both recharging and draining activities are necessary to function on a daily basis and make progress in life.

The key here is finding balance.

And that’s where I come to help!

I have spent years learning the subject of productivity and work-life balance.

And today, I’ll share with you five strategies that will help you become more proactive towards lessening the feeling overwhelmed affect in your life, becoming more productive, and feeling more in charge in all areas of your life.

Strategy # 1 – De-Stress:

This is the number one area that I want you to focus on!

De-stress is the best way to feel calm and collected before stress actually hits.

There are numerous ways that you can use to feel less stressed.

However, today I will share with you two ways that I feel are sufficient enough to get you started:

1. Breathing:

Our bodies need oxygen in order to function!

But when we are so busy and so stressed out, we start to take shallow breaths.

That will decrease the amount of oxygen in our body and our brain.

In order to function clearly, we need to breathe correctly and do that often.

Meet the 3-4-7 breathing technique.

You can utilize this technique to breathe easily and to flood your bloodstream with oxygen so you can feel more clear and focused.

2. Meditation:

I have talked about the subject of meditation extensively in previous articles .

Strategy # 2 – de-clutter your mind:

feeling overThis is another one of my favorite strategies to feel less stressed and less overwhelmed.

I call it the decluttering of the mind!

The way I utilize this technique, which is also referred to as a brain dump, is by getting a piece of paper or opening a word document on my computer and start listing everything that I need to do for the day.

You can even go further and do one for the week, month, etc.

By doing this exercise, you’re actually taking all the clutter that is residing inside your brain and your mind and putting it on a piece of paper.

By doing so, you will have less anxiety about forgetting something, and you will have more visibility of all the tasks that you need to get done.

Strategy # 3 -Re-energize your body:

biker-silhouette_GJ3k9uH__LThe best way to eliminate stress and to stop the feeling of being overwhelmed is to stay active.

Staying active is linked to higher levels of productivity, more sharpness and clarity, and an even linked to longevity.

There are gazillion ways to stay active!

So, start small by going on a daily walk.

If you’re already active then get more active’ join a gym, join a Zumba class, or go to Yoga or Pilates

It doesn’t matter what kind of activity you do as long as you keep your body moving and active then you’re energizing the body and lessening the feeling overwhelmed effect.

Strategy # 4 -Re-hydrate your body:

Did you know that 50 to 65% of our bodies are actually water?

In infants, that level goes up to 75%. Shocking, isn’t it?

Ok, back to the subject of rehydrating the body!

Another fantastic way to ward off stress is to simply drink more water; I call this sip stress away.

You see stress can cause dehydration, and dehydration can cause stress.

What a vicious cycle?

But you can break that by consuming more water daily.

Numerous studies have shown that just by being half a liter dehydrated, you can increase your cortisol levels.

We all know Cortisol is one of those stress hormones.

So staying well hydrated can keep your stress levels down and say goodbye to feeling overwhelmed.

Keeping on drinking, water that is 🙂

Strategy # 5 – Be kind to yourself

You might be asking “how being kind to myself is going to make me feel less overwhelmed.”

I’ll tell you why?

We are human – remember that!

We need to give ourselves credit !

We really just need to cut ourselves some slack!

Sh*t is always going to happen; things are bound to go wrong at times but if we focus on the big picture, and stop stressing ourselves over the little stuff, then believe me you will feel less stressed, more empowered and more energized.

The reason I wanted to and the article with the subject of kindness, is because we can be the most unkind people to ourselves and especially ourselves.

So remember you’re human.

You are allowed to make mistakes, so just give yourself some credit.
